RVA Retained by Durham Region to Rehabilitate Corbett Creek Trunk Sanitary Sewer

Durham Region retained RVA to support the assessment, design, and rehabilitation of a critical section of the Corbett Creek Trunk Sanitary Sewer (TSS) beneath the CN/Metrolinx railway corridor. The project was undertaken by Evan Toews, who served as the Project Manager, Designer, and Contract Administrator, Stewart Dickson, who served as Project Director and Quality Reviewer, Ghazal Malik who served as Project Controller, and Courtney Beneteau and Paul Mikoda who managed the environmental aspect of the project.

Following a detailed technical review and evaluation of multiple trenchless rehabilitation methods, RVA recommended Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) slip-lining, a new technology for the Region, and a preferred solution for the structurally distressed segment of the TSS.

“GRP slip-lining allows for factory manufactured level quality control while still being able to be installed through trenchless methods. GRP manufacturers claim an in-service product lifespan of up to 100 years compared to typical rehabilitation product lifespans which are industry accepted as 50 years,” Evan explained.

The project was delivered with a strong focus on long-term infrastructure resilience, environmental protection, and maintaining reliable wastewater service for the surrounding community, all while minimizing impacts within the environmentally sensitive Corbett Creek corridor.

“This project allowed for a rapid rehabilitation of an existing critical trunk sewer without having to take it offline or bypass it, by working in live flow conditions,” Evan noted. “The successful installation continues trenchless industry trends showing that existing infrastructure which is deteriorating can be rehabilitated to give it new life instead of replacing it with new infrastructure, reducing costs and surface impacts.”

Approximately 135 metres of the trunk sewer were rehabilitated using GRP slip-lining, installed between two newly built access chambers while maintaining continuous flow, with the work completed in under a month. RVA’s environmental team played a key role throughout construction by carrying out site assessments and implementing protective measures to safeguard sensitive habitat and species within the Corbett Creek corridor. This rehabilitation effort reinforces the durability of a vital piece of infrastructure and supports the continued delivery of reliable wastewater services to the local community.
