Toronto, ON—April 2, 2024—R. V. Anderson Associates Limited (RVA), a leader in the provision of engineering and architectural consulting services, has reaffirmed its status as one of Canada’s Top Small and Medium Employers for the fifth consecutive year.

Now in its 11th year of operation, the annual Canada’s Top Small & Medium Employers editorial competition recognizes leading small and medium enterprises (SMEs) that offer the nation’s best workplaces and forward-thinking human resources policies. Applicants are evaluated based on the same criteria as Mediacorp’s esteemed Top 100 Employers project, which include: 1) Physical Workplace; 2) Work Atmosphere & Social; 3) Health, Financial & Family Benefits; 4) Vacation & Time Off; 5) Employee Communications; 6) Performance Management; 7) Training & Skills Development; and 8) Community Involvement.

RVA was selected as an employer of choice based on an evaluation of all its current initiatives, but was recognized by MediaCorp notably for its focus on creating a culture of growth, learning, and wellbeing. Employment at RVA includes a complete health, vision, and dental benefits plan, a group pension plan with match, and top-ups for new and expecting parents. RVA also continues to invest in personal and professional development opportunities and various employee support programs, such as subsidies for ongoing education and training, incentives for industry events and involvement, tailored mentoring, in-house certification courses, ISO 45001-certified health and safety training, generous employee referral bonuses, a complimentary Employee Family Assistance Program (EFAP), mental health benefits, and online health and wellness programs.

“There’s an interesting relationship we see between SMEs and larger employers,” says Richard Yerema, executive editor at the Canada’s Top 100 Employers project. “SMEs are often the trendsetters, taking risks on initiatives like enhanced paid time-off, flexible hours and hybrid work options long before these types of improvements are considered by larger employers. As employers of all sizes compete to attract and retain staff, the best SMEs take notice of what larger employers are offering employees, such as parental leave top-up, mental health programs, and even retirement assistance. Both groups of employers end up moving the dial to ensure that programs improve and benefit all their employees.”

As one of the fastest growing small-to-medium sized engineering firms in Canada, RVA continues to maintain a collaborative workplace culture that fosters connection, innovation, and growth. RVA supports several employee-led committees and designated working groups that put company policies into practice, helping to advance initiatives such as Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), sustainability and climate change, and Indigenous relations. Flexibility remains a key component of RVA’s workplace ethos, and the firm continues to host seasonal corporate functions and teambuilding events throughout the year to encourage staff participation and engagement across different working environments, such as virtual games, lunch and learns, coffee chats, contests, team dinners, and remote fitness classes. Through its volunteering, Social Committee, and Community Engagement Committee, RVA members also work together to support local charities across the country that give back to the communities in which we operate, including food drives, fundraising events, giveaways, and raffles.

“I’d like to extend a heartfelt ‘thank you’ to our amazing team who have made this recognition possible over the last five years,” said Shawn Scott, President and CEO of RVA. “By bringing their commitment, passion, and ideas to RVA, each and every one of our team members plays an integral role in upholding our unified mission to make a positive impact for our clients and communities. This award is a testament to our team’s consistent efforts to provide an inclusive environment where people can thrive and lead with purpose.”

The complete list of Canada’s Top Small & Medium Employers for 2023 was announced today in a special magazine, co-published in The Globe and Mail. Detailed reasons for our selection were released by the editors today on the Canada’s Top 100 Employers’ competition homepage.
