Dennis Consultants, a division of R.V. Anderson Associates Limited (RVA) was retained to design and provide contract administration for the intersection improvements of the Kingsway (MR 55), Falconbridge Highway (MR 86) and Second Avenue (MR 72) in the City of Greater Sudbury. The improvements to this major arterial intersection were based on recommendations from a traffic study, which addressed existing deficiencies, the traffic impact of a proposed “Box Store” retail development and future long-term traffic forecasts. One of the most significant recommendations to increase traffic flow at the intersection was the introduction of three dual left-turn lanes which is a unique design feature.
The project consisted of the widening and reconstruction of approximately 1.0 km of urban arterial road to accommodate additional lanes and included new storm sewer system, streetlights and traffic signals. In addition to the detail design of the intersection, the project required public meetings, property acquisitions, utility relocations, MOE approvals, review of existing infrastructure and the preparation of tender documents. The project also included the design and construction for the grading and rock removal in preparation for a future four-lane easterly extension of the Kingsway.
