R.V. Anderson Associates Limited has completed the detailed design and construction administration services for Peel Region’s new effluent outfall for the Clarkson Wastewater Treatment Plant. The outfall consists of a 12 m diameter by 45 m deep vertical drop shaft connecting to a 3 m diameter tunnel that extends 2.2 km out under Lake Ontario.
The tunnel is connected to the lakebed with 18 to 14 m long vertical diffuser risers bored into the lakebed to the level of the tunnel. The tunnel was constructed by C&M McNally Engineering Corp. and the marine sub-contractor was Dean Construction Company. The project involved complex approval processes, including hydrologic dispersion modelling, and fisheries approvals from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Ministry of Natural Resources, and Credit Valley Conservation.
